(Registered Charity No.: 207610)

The Mark Benevolent Fund is a registered charity (No. 207610) came into existence in 1868 on the suggestion of the Reverend George Raymond Portal, Grand Master of the Mark. His views on charity were far more radical and progressive than the general thinking of the time. He felt that for charity to be effective it had to be disbursed swiftly and without the bureaucratic formalities of other Masonic charities. To him it was wrong for there to be any delay in providing assistance to those in need and his own Latin tag “Bis dat qui cito dat” – he gives twice who gives promptly – became, and still is, the principal guideline of the M.B.F.
Every year a different Province hosts the M.B.F. Festival. A Province will organise its own fund raising towards a target that it sets and concludes with a Festival Banquet when the final results are announced. Festival Stewardships are obtained by a brother and/or his Lady by paying a fee to the Stewards Fund for each hosting Festival.
Welcome Message from the President of M.B.F.
May I welcome you to the webpage of the Mark Benevolent Fund, which I hope you find interesting and helpful. In this website you will learn about the origins of the Mark Benevolent Fund, the ways we raise funds, our charitable objects and our work on benevolence and charity.
Our charity has been around for more than 150 years and has a distinguished record, having given millions of pounds to worthy causes during that time. My fellow trustees and I are proud to carry on the excellent work of the M.B.F., making a difference to people’s lives wherever we can.

We are here for YOU
When it comes to individual Petitioners things are handled slightly differently. When a Lodge Almoner is made aware of a Brother or his family in distress he should immediately arrange a visit by himself or a visiting Brother to assess the circumstances and then complete a grant application form with as much information as possible. This is then passed to the M.B.F. via the Provincial Almoner. The case is then reviewed, any further information deemed necessary asked for and then submitted to the next Petitions Committee. It is important for Lodge Almoners to be aware of Brethren not dining at the Festive Board, missing meetings or failing to pay annual fees. This may be a sign of distress and it is their role to try and assist if at all possible.
The following are examples of what help we can offer:
(It is not a definitive list and each case will be considered entirely on its own merits)

Daily living costs
Daily living costs when caused by a change of circumstances, although in most cases we would prefer to help with specific or unexpected capital expenditure

Household repairs
Household repairs or replacements, including boilers and white goods, required for a dignified standard of living and acceptable quality of life

Household arrears
Household arrears (utilities, mortgage, Council tax etc.) when caused by a change of circumstances

Transport requirements
Transport requirements for hospital visits relating to a chronic or ongoing medical condition

Mobility aids
Mobility aids and equipment required to improve daily quality of life

Respite care
Respite care to give much needed breaks for carers
If you think the Mark Benevolent Fund may be able to help, first speak to your Lodge Almoner, or directly to the Mark Provincial Grand Almoner if you prefer, who will be able to advise you accordingly. If the Provincial Grand Almoner considers that your circumstances qualify for submission to the M.B.F. he will discuss it with you, document all the information required, and make the submission on your behalf. All information will be treated with complete confidentiality.
Please Note: Applications for assistance from the Craft (via the M.C.F.) or from other local Mark or Craft Charities should be treated separately and made in addition to your application to the M.B.F.

Major Capital Grants 2024
The President of Mark Benevolent Fund (M.B.F.), R.W.Bro. Archie Torrance, has announced a £1.7 million donation to support wheelchair rugby clubs across Great Britain. This initiative aims to promote inclusion and help develop future Paralympic athletes, focusing on the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Registered clubs can apply for grants of up to £50,000 for capital expenses like wheelchairs, sports kits, vehicles, and facility upgrades. The Great Britain National Wheelchair Rugby Team will also receive up to £30,000 to support their 2028 Paralympic preparations. Operational, travel, and accommodation costs are excluded from funding.

A major donation of £750,000 to support Blood Bike Groups across England & Wales.
The Mark Benevolent Fund (M.B.F.) first learned about blood bike charities in January 2016 through an application from Northumbria Blood Bikes. These charities, represented by the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes, support public health by offering free, out-of-hours transportation of blood and human tissue for NHS sites, reducing NHS costs. Word of the M.B.F.’s support spread, leading to more applications.
In May 2017, the M.B.F. Charity Walk in central London raised £437,934, prompting the Trustees to invite blood bike charities across England and Wales to apply for funding for new vehicles. As a result, the M.B.F. has sponsored 16 blood bikes and 10 blood cars, contributing over £515,000 in total for vehicles and essential equipment, supporting the vital work of these charities.
To date the Mark Benevolent Fund has sponsored 16 Blood Bikes and 10 Blood Cars.

A heartfelt token of gratitude from the charitable organisations we proudly support
Take a look at the heartfelt appreciation from Sanj Srikanthan, Chief Executive at ShelterBox, expressing gratitude towards the Mark Benevolent Fund and our generous contributors. Our ongoing support via donations has greatly impacted ShelterBox's initiatives since 2010.
Our M.B.F. team’s visit to the Canterbury Umbrella Centre was a heartwarming experience that highlighted the transformative impact of M.B.F. grants on small community organisations and their beneficiaries. The Umbrella Centre’s commitment to making a difference is truly inspiring.
Our Members in Action

This is the story of W.Bro. Bob O’Malley-White’s 15,000 ft Parachute Jump, which Raised £3,697.73 for the 2028 MBF Festival.

Robin Evans covered more than 350 miles in the saddle, for which he raised on excess of £3300, for the Kent Mark Benevolent Fund.

Bro. Matt decided to run in this year’s London Marathon (42.195 km) and raise just over £2,500 for Warwickshire M.B.F. Festival 2027.
An exceptional day took place this year at Metropolitan Grand Lodge for the culmination of the London Freemason's Appeal for London's Air Ambulance 'Up Against Time' Appeal. This proud and significant occasion featured the presentation of an impressive set of heavy mauls, gifted in appreciation of the MBF’s generous £100,000 donation, presented by the Metropolitan Grand Master. We plan to use these mauls for the first time at the March 2025 Communication of Mark Grand Lodge, an event focused on benevolence, charity, the MBF, and local benevolent funds. This symbolic gesture honoured the dedication and unity of London Freemasons in their commitment to a cause so essential to the community.

We reported recently that the new style MBF Festival Stewardship is aimed principally, but not, exclusively, at members of each host Festival Province. In return for a qualifying donation of £100, each Steward will be entitled to:
- A distinctive Stewards’ breast jewel, year bar and pocket jewel holder.
- Inclusion of their name in the Festival Stewards’ Roll of Honour in the Festival booklet
- And for individuals making their first donation under the scheme, qualification as a Life Governor of the Mark Benevolent Fund – the first step on the ladder of honorifics.
- Monies raised by the take-up of Festival Stewardships will, of course, be included in each respective Festival total.

Brethren fortunate to have been present at the communication meeting of the Mark Grand Lodge in March 2022 will recall Mrs. Diana Constantin-Tiglar, founder of the Asociate Prioritate Pentru Umanite (APPU), referring to Mark Brethren as “Guardian Angels.” Her remark was in response to the financial aid provided by the Mark Benevolent Fund, which was then supporting over 250 Ukrainian women and children who had fled to Romania as refugees following the Russian invasion in Spring 2021. As the conflict persists, the M.B.F. continues to assist APPU, which currently provides shelter for 142 women and children, ranging in age from 6 months to 85 years. Each carries a story of loss—be it homes, loved ones, or treasured possessions. Of the original 250 refugees supported in 2022, the Fund now aids 130 women and children. While some have returned to Ukraine, the majority have relocated to reunite with family in other parts of Romania or elsewhere in Europe.
Please note that if you want to specifically send donations to the Mark Emergency Relief Fund (for humanitarian aid purposes), kindly mention "MARK EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND No: MMM 185622" on the donation form.
