The Order of the Secret Monitor or Brotherhood of David and Jonathan

OSM sweeney 300The Order of the Secret Monitor, which developed from a still more ancient Degree, is the Brotherhood of David and Jonathan and is in its way older than Freemasonry itself. Its principles and its watchwords being founded upon those grand examples set by two worthy Hebrew Princes around 1000 BC as recorded in the Jewish history of the Bible.

History tells us that the “Order of David & Jonathan” was taken to the New World in or about 1658 by Dutch settlers. The inauguration meeting of Grand Conclave, under the banner of Alfred Meadows Conclave No. 1 was held at the Hotel Victoria, London, SW on 15 July 1887.

This is a Society framed upon the principles of self sacrifice; of mutual trust, watchful Brotherly care; of warning in time of danger; solace in time of sorrow; and skillful and effective friendly advice in every circumstance of life: A Society that meets a great and crying need in human affairs and is calculated to benefit those who act up to its tenets.

There are three Degrees in the Order; Induction ceremony, Princes or admission Degree and the Third Degree which is when a Brother is Installed as a Supreme Ruler of his Conclave. At this point he is also commissioned as a Supreme Ruler within the Order. This entitles him to conduct ceremonies in any Conclave.

Right Worthy Brother Richard Samuel Moss

After a prolonged period of illness, Right Worthy Brother Richard Samuel Moss passed to the Grand Conclave above on Wednesday 5th September 2018. He is survived by his wife, Hazel and children Sam and Tom and two Granddaughters.

Richard was inducted into Northworthy Conclave No. 287 in 1992 and was Installed as Supreme Ruler in 2002. In the Province of the East Midlands, Richard was Appointed Provincial Grand Standard Bearer in 2004 and was Installed as Provincial Grand Supreme Ruler on 28th November 2006.

The East Midlands Supreme Rulers’ Conclave No.598 was Consecrated and on the 24th February 2018, as his last service to the Province, Right Worthy Brother Richard led the Consecrating team for the Belper Conclave 628.

Until his illness Richard was renowned for his visiting – within the Province, he attended almost every ceremony in all the Conclaves, he was also well known for visiting all of the other Provinces within the British Isles.

It was not just in our Order that Richard demonstrated his commitment to Freemasonry – he was a leading figure in several orders – in the Mark Degree, Knights Templar, Royal and Select Masters, SRIA, Allied Masonic Degrees, KBHC and of course Scarlet Cord where he was our Provincial Grand Summus from 2013.

Right Worthy Brother Richard’s passing is a great loss to Freemasonry. He had an impact on the lives of many Brethren and will be greatly missed. However, through his hard work and dedication he has left us with a great legacy and many happy memories. He was a great character and all who knew him would agree that it was a privilege to have known him.
